In or Out Pickleball Call

Calling the pickleball in or out sounds like a simple task but it can be a little deceiving. The vantage point from which you are viewing the ball can make it even more difficult. The rule for in or out pickleball calls is clear, if any part of the ball touches the line the ball is in.

Sounds simple, but in the moment it can be a tough call. The ball is made of durable, tough plastic and holds it shape with little to no give. A ball can land out and yet part of the ball (is off the ground) but hangs over the line and can therefor appear to be in and vice versa. See the diagram below.

If any part of the ball physically touches the line the ball is in.

Strategy to IN or OUT Pickleball Shots

Two of the three OUT balls are pretty clear but one hangs over the line can be a challenging call. If you are the one playing the ball then you should always be prepared to play the ball like it is IN. You can call the ball out immediately after hitting it if you have to.

Benefit of the Doubt Call

Benefit of the doubt calls always go to the opponent. This one is pretty simple, if there is any doubt between two partners whether the pickleball was in or out…the call is IN. See our Pickleball Rules page for more info
